WHO WE ARE

The Philadelphia Academy is a private language agency, who has been working in the field of teaching languages in Mladá Boleslav for 9 years. We specialize in language classes for companies, individuals as well as the general public. Language classes are available throughout the year either at the students' offices or homes or in our classrooms. Individual classes are available as well as small group classes (maximum 8 people). At our clients' request we can also organize a weekend or holiday courses or courses in the mountains. We offer English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian and Serbo-Croatian and Czech for foreigners as well as special courses, primarily Business English and German and professional oriented courses (for example technical or medical terminology).

METHODOLOGY

Our goal is not to force any student into a pre-existing category of teaching methods, but rather to work with our students to develop each one's personal learning style. Then, by drawing on the wealth of methods currently used in Second Language Acquisition, our teachers develop an effective curriculum based on the needs, interests and desires of the student, on their time and financial possibilities and the level of their knowledge taken from their placement test. The Philadelphia Academy's concept of language has been heavily influenced by the work of Noam Chomsky at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In short, Mr. Chomsky has liberated language teaching from the chains of stuffy grammarians by showing the world that language is more than just the aggregate of grammar rules and vocabulary. He reminds us that language's most important function is nothing less than CREATIVITY. Our teachers stress speaking and writing as the two most important aspects of language. Confidence in speaking allows the student to converse with native speakers and thus enhances the student's listening comprehension skills. Writing makes the cumbersome points of grammar more understandable and allows the student to test his/her grammar skills outside of the confines of workbooks or boring grammar exercises. It allows him/her to use his/her language creatively and communicatively.

TEACHERS

The team of teachers at the Philadelphia Academy is professional. Each teacher is fully qualified either by a university in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, or Europe. The Philadelphia Academy employs both native English speakers and native Czech speakers who have attained an acceptable proficiency for teaching beginners. Our teachers of Czech for foreigners are all native Czech speakers who are also proficient in either German or English. All of our teachers have dedicated themselves to finding the appropriate methods for their students' success and are versed in all applicable methods of Second Language Acquisition.
